The attack happened on Valentine's Day, February 14, not long after Mitchell moved into the apartment with Jones, her family says. Now he's charged with attempted murder. Police told the outlet Mitchell had confessed to the attack but claimed that he was acting in self-defense.

Danielle Jones was working for a catering company when she found a roommate, 35-year-old Byron Mitchell, on classifieds website Craigslist two weeks ago.

"He beat her to a coma and ventilator support with various face and skull fractures, multiple injuries to include multiple cuts on her face..."
