Obama will be a no-show at Scalia's funeral
A Republican senator seemed to break Wednesday with his party leader's insistence that President Barack Obama not nominate a Supreme Court replacement for the late Antonin Scalia.
Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill planned to attend the Mass, but Obama will not, despite some criticism from Republicans.
"The president, obviously, believes it's important for the institution of the presidency to pay his respects to somebody who dedicated three decades of his life to the institution of the Supreme Court", said Josh Earnest, White House spokesman.
One does not have to have liked Justice Scalia or his positions to recognize that the occasion calls for the head of state to be in attendance. Invoking the Constitution he has selective use for, President Obama told reporters it was his "duty" to submit a name to the U.S. Senate for confirmation.

But to defeat Obama's push, media consultants say, the GOP's politicians should keep repeating an identical, tiresome and vague response on the issue, which would eventually starve the media of new drama that allows Obama to keep political pressure on the GOP.
Her comments, made in an interview with Fox 10 Phoenix, were a rebuke to Republicans who have said they wouldn't be willing to entertain an Obama nominee to replace Scalia's seat on the high court.
Appointed by Republican President Ronald Reagan in 1986, Scalia earned a reputation as a brilliant jurist during an era of conservative dominance on the court. At that time, Politico notes, then-President George W. Bush attended the funeral and also gave a eulogy.
Speculation abounds as to whom Obama will nominate for Scalia's place, as many Republicans demand that the nomination take place after the new president takes office next year.
SC primary: Three reasons why Donald Trump needs to win big
Cruz, on his last full day of campaigning in SC , wasn't willing to predict a Trump victory despite the big poll lead. At an MSNBC town hall in Las Vegas Thursday, Clinton criticized Sanders' comments questioning President Obama.
"We want to thank the U.S. Senators who say that the American people should decide who picks the next Supreme Court justice", said the group's chief counsel, Carrie Severino, in a statement announcing the campaign.
"Although vacancies during an election year are rare, more than a dozen Supreme Court justices have been confirmed in presidential election years".
Obama has not specified when he will submit a nominee to fill Scalia's seat.
Rather, Republicans are saying no one should be named until after the presidential election in November, hoping that one of their own will be elected and get to choose the next justice.
