Welker leaves field on cart with knee injury

6:35 pm – Welker’s season is over. ESPN is reporting that initial tests showed a tear of his ACL and MCL in the left knee. This is a devastating loss for the Patriots as Welker was the focal point of their offense this season.

On a positive note, this injury should curtail any discussion the league may have on making teams play their starters late in the season when nothing is on the line. Seeing a competitive game is a nice thought, but having the stars make it through to the playoffs intact is more important in the long run.

12:30 pm – The Patriots offense may have taken a serious blow today, with Pro Bowl wide receiver Wes Welker suffering what looks to be a serious knee injury in their final regular season game of the year against Houston. Welker immediately crumpled to the ground in pain after making a cut, and was helped off the field by team trainers before being carted into the locker room.

Obviously, an MRI will have to take place before any specifics surrounding the injury will be released but right now, the prognosis doesn’t look good. We’ll update this post as needed with the latest news this afternoon.
