Browns put Lewis on ice; retirement imminent?

For the past nine seasons, Jamal Lewis has been the epitome of a workhorse in the backfield for both the Ravens and the Browns, rushing for over 10,000 yards and scoring 59 touchdowns.

But after suffering an unspecified head injury during last week’s contest against the Bengals, Lewis career looks to be in jeopardy as the Browns have decided to shelve him for the remainder of the season by placing him on the injured reserve list, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Lewis made his intentions clear prior to the start of this season, saying he would retire at the end of the year. But with his season coming to a conclusion much quicker than anticipated, Lewis may take some time to reflect on that statement before making a final announcement on how he would like to leave the game.

If he does decide to hang his cleats up for good, he’ll leave the league as a highly decorated player, with plenty of records and accomplishments throughout his entire career. Lewis is one of only five NFL running backs to post more than 2,000 yards in a single season. He accomplished that feat in 2003, joining O.J. Simpson, Eric Dickerson, Barry Sanders, and Terrell Davis in the record books.
