Holmgren takes charge in Cleveland

After a surprising denial of his former team last weekend, Mike Holmgren ended all the speculation on his future employer today, agreeing to a deal with the Browns to be the new team president in Cleveland.

Holmgren had been offered a senior role in the management of the Seahawks, but chose challenge over familiarity in deciding on Cleveland for his new home. He now takes charge of one of the league’s most disappointing franchises this decade, and will begin work immediately on reshaping the roster, and potentially the coaching staff to his liking.

Browns owner Randy Lerner stated that he wanted to add “a serious, credible leader” to the organization. Adding Holmgren gives the Browns just that: a proven winner with a lengthy track record of turning mediocre teams into winners.

Current head coach Eric Mangini seems to be safe for now, given the ringing endorsements he’s received as of late from multiple Browns players, new and old. Lerner is also said to be a proponent of keeping Mangini around next season, but it’s likely that Holmgren will have the final say in whether he stays or goes.

Lerner released the news earlier this evening that the two sides had reached an agreement, but held off on making it official for the time being. It’s expected that a formal announcement introducing Holmgren will take place sometime next week.
