Washington still on the hunt for Sam Bradford

Over the past few years, trading up to the #1 overall pick has become a fleeting ghost of history, with teams being extremely reluctant to part with the compensation package needed to move that high in the draft.

But that hasn’t stopped teams from discussing potential trades involving the top selection, and this year is no exception, with the Redskins reportedly pushing hard to switch spots with the Rams tonight to take Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford.

Citing several sources around the league, NFL Fanhouse’s Dan Graziano is reporting that Washington is making a late push this morning to convince St. Louis to give up their stranglehold on the #1 pick. Apparently, the Redskins are using multiple players already on their roster to entice the Rams into the trade, with the most likely candidates for such a deal being quarterback Jason Campbell and defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.

Giving up both players along with the #4 overall selection would definitely be a steep price to pay for Washington, but considering the fact that they’re already on the trading block anyway, it wouldn’t be all that much to stomach from the Redskins point of view.

Stafford ready to be the man in Motown

10:10 pm: It’s finished. Stafford will be the #1 overall pick in 2009. John Clayton (ESPN.com) is reporting that the Lions have officially signed Stafford to a six-year, $78 million deal, with $41.7 million guaranteed. Not too bad for a player that’s never played a down in the league.

6:10 pm: Time to embrace your new quarterback of the future Detroit. Matt Stafford is coming to town.

According to Thomas George (NFL.com), a source within the organization has come forward to say that nothing’s going to stop the Lions from taking Stafford #1 overall in tomorrow’s draft. The two sides have been huddled up for some time now, hashing out contract parameters, and while the Lions have publicly stated they’ll be happy to fall back on a verbal agreement they have in place with Aaron Curry, their intent all along has been clear.

Stafford did his part for the media today, expressing excitement at the opportunity to play in Detroit: (more…)

Source: Stafford, Lions closing in on agreement

8:54 pm: Final negotiations have begun between Stafford and the Lions according to Steve Wyche (NFL.com), and an agreement could be reached tonight. This comes on the heels of the news from Tom Kowalski (MLive.com) that Detroit has already reached a deal with Wake Forest LB Aaron Curry and is simply waiting to see if Stafford will come to terms before the team is on the clock.

3:58 pm: Detroit’s front office is categorically denying the report by the Oakland Press, and is doing their best to insist that no deal is complete with Stafford as of right now, according to Tom Kowalski (MLive.com).

3:47 pm: According to a report by David Birkett (Oakland Press), the Detroit Lions and Matt Stafford are on the verge of a contract, locking the Georgia QB in as the number one overall pick in this weekend’s draft. The Lions have ths far denied the story, but the source cited by Birkett in the story stated emphatically that “a ‘catastrophe’ would have to happen for the Lions not to draft Stafford at this point.”

Detroit’s front office brass apparently met with team owner William Clay Ford this afternoon to receive his final approval on the deal, and once things are finalized, a press conference would likely be forthcoming prior to the draft to announce the team’s intentions.

Cheaper alternative? Curry will take less to be first pick

Pat Kirwan (NFL.com) sat down with Wake Forest LB Aaron Curry earlier today on his radio show to talk about his feelings on his status heading into this weekend’s draft, and came away from the interview with the distinct impression that Curry is more than willing to be paid less money over the course of his contract if the Lions decide to draft him #1 overall.

Detroit is currently in negotiations with Curry’s agents, however they are also working closely with the representatives for both QB Matt Stafford and OT Jason Smith, so not much can be read into that right now. If the Lions end up taking Curry, he would join a LB corp that is vastly improved from a year ago, lining up next to Julian Peterson and Ernie Sims. That, along with the discount it seems that Curry is willing to take, would make a strong case for the Lions to take him, but it remains to be seen what Detroit’s brass decides to do.

Deal done in Detroit? Lions aren’t saying… yet

Detroit Lions GM Martin Mayhew said very little as to his team’s progress in signing their top draft choice (#1 overall) prior to the NFL Draft this weekend, but he did indicate that the chances are shaping up to be very good that a deal will be finished soon when he spoke with reporters earlier today.

The Lions have entertained the agents from three of the draft’s top players in Detroit recently, including OT Jason Smith (Baylor), QB Matt Stafford (Georgia), and LB Aaron Curry (Wake Forest). There has been little news as to which player the team currently prefers, but the general consensus among league sources is that Stafford will eventually be the Lions top selection when everything finally shakes out.
