Detroit Lions GM Martin Mayhew said very little as to his team’s progress in signing their top draft choice (#1 overall) prior to the NFL Draft this weekend, but he did indicate that the chances are shaping up to be very good that a deal will be finished soon when he spoke with reporters earlier today.

The Lions have entertained the agents from three of the draft’s top players in Detroit recently, including OT Jason Smith (Baylor), QB Matt Stafford (Georgia), and LB Aaron Curry (Wake Forest). There has been little news as to which player the team currently prefers, but the general consensus among league sources is that Stafford will eventually be the Lions top selection when everything finally shakes out.
