Two rounds, 64 picks, and several questionable trades later, the first day of the 2009 NFL Draft is complete. Obviously things strayed from the script somewhat, but then again what would the draft be without a bit of insanity from a few of the league’s wayward franchises?

There were teams that seemingly couldn’t get enough of the first two rounds (Broncos – 5 picks; Bills – 4 picks) and then there were teams that stayed away completely (Cowboys, Bears – Zero picks). And everyone’s favorite owner in Oakland did what he does best in getting the entire population of the country to collectively scratch their heads while simultaneously Twittering a rousing WTF?

With that in mind, here’s a quick rundown of each team’s picks in round one, along with my grades…I’ll also be working on round two, and should have it up and running before tomorrow’s festivities get started.

1. Matt Stafford (QB) – Georgia

This was a pick that had to be made in Detroit, especially after enduring a 0-16 season last year. Getting a legit franchise QB should at the very least generate a bit of buzz around the city this fall, and that’s exactly what the Lions need right now. Grade: A

2. Jason Smith (OT) – Baylor

Great pick here by the Rams. Smith has the ability to be a dominant bookend tackle, protecting the blind side of whoever the Rams trot into the huddle as QB for years to come. He’s not too bad of a run blocker either, which should make Steven Jackson a very happy man next fall. Grade: A

3. Tyson Jackson (DE) – LSU

As a lifelong Chiefs fan, this pick was initially disappointing, as I would have preferred Aaron Curry here, but after careful reflection, I like what KC did in getting Jackson. He’s not a glamorous player by any means, but he’ll work his ass off and he never quits; two things that the Chiefs obviously had issues with last year. Grade: B-

4. Aaron Curry (LB) – Wake Forest

Once KC passed on Curry one pick earlier, this move was an absolute no brainer. Curry has perennial Pro Bowler written all over him and should make the fans in Seattle forget about Julian Peterson in two seconds flat. Grade: A

5. Mark Sanchez (QB) – USC

(From CLE) – The Jets gave up three players and their first round pick to the Browns so they could grab their QBOTF in Sanchez here. It’s going to be tough to truly analyze this move until the end of the year, but as right now, Jets fans have to be ecstatic. Grade: B+

6. Andre Smith (OT) – Alabama

In the end, Smith’s outstanding body of work on the field overcame his terrible decisions off it, and the Bengals will benefit next season when he is protecting Carson Palmer. I’m not sure if Eugene Monroe would have been a better value here, but overall this is a solid move for Cinci. Grade: B

7. Darrius Heyward-Bey (WR) – Maryland

This is a clear case of a nice player with excellent speed becoming a god in the mind of Al Davis and then getting picked way too early as a result. DHB was projected to be a mid to late 1st round pick by pretty much everyone with a brain, but apparently Crazy Al believes speed will win playoff games because he went after it big time here. Grade: D-

8. Eugene Monroe (OT) – Virginia

Receivers? We don’t need no stinkin’ receivers! Not that this was a bad pick by any means, but how can you pass on taking a stud WR like Michael Crabtree here? Apparently, the Jags think Torry Holt is going to play for the next 10 seasons because they left a legit stud on the board in favor of a solid blocker instead. Grade: B

9. B.J. Raji (DT) – Boston College

Not much of a surprise here, as the Pack decided to get a mammoth nose tackle in Raji to jump start their transition to the 3-4. They could have gone with a tackle to keep Aaron Rodgers up right next fall, but I can’t fault them too much for going this route instead. Grade: B+

10. Michael Crabtree (WR) – Texas Tech

Finally! The 49ers go for the home run here instead of staying conservative and they’ll be thanking their good fortune this season when that decision pays off in a big way. Crabtree dropped slighly because of a few character concerns and Al Davis’ consistent insanity, but in the end he’ll be much happier across the bay in San Fran. Grade: A
