Titans looking into tampering charge

Tampering is a charge that is thrown around a lot during this time of the year, especially after teams end up signing major contracts with free agent players a few short hours into the free agency period.

This year is no different, as Tennessee is currently pursuing evidence that would indicate that the Redskins tampered with DT Albert Haynesworth prior to the official free agency period commencing.

The signs are all there, given that Washington was somehow able to finalize a deal with Haynesworth just five hours after the start of free agency that will pay him well over $100 million by the end of the contract, but the hardest part is drumming up enough evidence to pin the charge on the team in question.

Obviously the team allegedly doing the tampering is not going to confess nor will the player who signed the contract. The burden of proof rests squarely on the shoulders of the accuser and that is a difficult task to overcome.

Titans get busy with Haye, Washington

Tennessee has been one of the quieter clubs so far this off-season, despite having lost their premier defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth to free agency.

That changed earlier this evening with their acquisition of DT Jovan Haye and WR Nate Washington.

According to Adam Schefter, the Titans have reached agreement with both of the players on multi-year contracts, with Haye now making $16 million over four years. Terms were not yet available on Washington’s deal.

Haye is a penetrating three gap style defensive tackle, with enough speed to put pressure on the opposing quarterback. Prior to Tennessee, he spent three seasons in Tampa Bay, averaging 39 tackles over 10 starts per year.

Collins, Titans close to new deal

Tennessee has made it abundantly clear this off-season that their top priority was to re-sign their free agents and then focus on any additions they may need to make.

As of right now, they’re batting .500

After losing DT Albert Haynesworth to the Redskins via a monster contract, the Titans turned to QB Kerry Collins this afternoon, and have apparently convinced him to sign with the club, despite their differences in salary figures just a few days ago.

ESPN’s Michael Smith is reporting that Tennessee has reached a two year agreement with Collins, and should finalize the deal later on this evening. Terms have not yet been disclosed.

Titans re-sign McCareins

Len Pasquarelli (ESPN) is reporting that Tennessee has decided to re-sign veteran WR Justin McCareins to a one year deal worth approximately $770,000.

The Titans have struggled to find consistent production from their receivers as of late, with McCareins being the most reliable of the group. As a result, Tennessee made it a priority to re-sign him prior to the free agency period, and should enjoy some measure of continuity offensively next season with him in the lineup.

Titans ready to franchise Scaife

Adam Schefter (NFL.com) is reporting that the Titans will use their franchise designation on TE Bo Scaife later on today, now that they finalized a long term deal with K Rob Bironas.

The move will cost Tennessee an estimated $4.46 million for this season, which is a paltry number given the production they received from Scaife last year.

Haynesworth says no to Titans

Adam Schefter (NFL.com) is reporting that Titans DT Albert Haynesworth has decided to put off any talks of re-signing with Tennessee until he has had a chance to take a run through the free agent market later this month.

Haynesworth could very well end up becoming the league’s highest paid defender when things are all said and done, given his status as the premier defensive tackle in the game right now. Knowing that the Titans were hopeful of re-signing him before he could hit the the open market, but talks never really materialized.

Haynesworth in trouble with the law again

The Associated Press is reporting the Titans All-Pro DT Albert Haynesworth could possibly face significant legal punishment after he allegedly violated his probation agreement when he was the cause of a serious accident that left a Nashville man needing hip replacement surgery.

Williamson County district attorney Kim Helper is reviewing the case and is prepared to have a grand jury take up the matter as early as March 9th. Helper is alleging that Haynesworth should have informed his probation officer of the accident and that he will be treated the same as any other individual under the circumstances.

Haynesworth is currently discussing a major contract extension with the Titans front office, and could become a free agent this off-season if a deal is not struck in the next two weeks. Given his status as the premier defensive tackle in the league right now, it’s likely that he could receive one of the richest contracts in NFL history for a defensive player.

Cecil catches DC job in Tennessee

The Titans have finally found a worthy successor to their departed former defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, albeit several weeks later then expected, in Chuck Cecil, who has spent the past eight seasons as the defensive secondary coach in Tennessee.

The team will make the announcement at a press conference later today, according to Jim Wyatt (Nashville Tennessean). The Titans are likely to hire Marcus Robertson to succeed Cecil in the secondary position, although they could take a look around first, just to be sure.

Haynesworth to Tampa a realistic scenario

According to Stephen Holder (St. Petersburg Times), Tampa Bay has emerged as a likely destination for Titans DT Albert Haynesworth, should Tennessee fail to reach an agreement with him on a contract extension before the start of free agency.

The Bucs would love nothing more than to get their hands on Haynesworth, who has become the premier DT in the league over the past few seasons, and given their superb cap space ($38 million) Tampa could easily afford the massive amount of money he would demand.

Titans looking to lock up Haynesworth

According to John Clayton (ESPN), the Tennessee Titans have made significant inroads towards a new contract with free agent DT Albert Haynesworth.

Both sides seem to be amicable to a deal taking place, although the Titans will definitely have to pony up some serious cash to make it happen, given Haynesworth’s status as the premier defensive tackle in the league right now. Haynesworth was originally drafted by the Titans and despite numerous legal issues off the field, he has emerged as one of the team’s leaders on defense.

Collins staying put as the starter in Tennessee

Citing a source close to the team, ESPN is reporting that Titans head coach Jeff Fisher has already told QB Kerry Collins that he is their choice to be the starter at quarterback next season, and hopes to re-sign him to a new deal soon.

Obviously this move underscores the team’s lack of faith in QB Vince Young, and they are seemingly content to pay Young his huge contract to stay on the bench for the time being. Young has promised to work hard this off-season to get himself physically and mentally ready to play next season, but could have issues dealing with his semi-permanent demotion unless the team finds a way to use him off the bench.

Collins took over the starting job early last season, and led the Titans to the AFC South crown and home-field advantage in the playoffs, before being knocked out in the divisional round by the Baltimore Ravens. He is currently slated to be the third QB for the AFC squad in the Pro Bowl, after Jets QB Brett Favre decided not to play.

Titans roundup – Monday

There were a number of news items on Tennessee that hit the desk today, and after their crushing loss at home to the Ravens, it’s comes as little surprise. Here they are in no particular order:

  • QB Kerry Collins wants to come back as the Titans starter next season, but it’s doubtful that the team would pay Vince Young major cash to ride the bench next year. Tennessee head coach Jeff Fisher reiterated that point today, and laid the foundation for Young to become the starter once more.
  • The AP reported that RB Chris Johnson is having a MRI today to evaluate his injured ankle, and while the team has been careful to label it a high ankle sprain, his status for the Pro-Bowl in February is most certainly in doubt.
