White looking for new home in 2010?

Tennessee made a tremendous push in the second half of the season to finish the year at 8-8, and while most of the Titans players walked away from the stadium last week feeling good about their chances in 2010, there is at least one member of the team that is unhappy with the status quo.

Running back LenDale White has clearly been pushed aside in favor of superstar rusher Chris Johnson, who put together a season for the ages with 2,006 yards on the ground, and that seems to be something that White is unhappy about headed into the off-season.

According to Jim Wyatt of the Nashville Tennessean, White is hoping to have an opportunity to leave the Titans via free agency for a team that will give him more a chance to be the lead runner next year. Under normal circumstances, White would be free to do as he wishes this off-season, but without a new collective bargaining agreement in place, he’ll be a restricted free agent instead.

That will allow the Titans to offer him a one year contract and have a shot at matching any other deal White gets on the open market. If they decide not to match it, they’ll receive compensation from the team that takes White on board, making a big contract highly unlikely, at least this year.

Cowher, Redskins not a good match

There is a growing consensus around the league that believes that former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher is ready to make a return to the sidelines next fall, and while there have been several speculative reports with him potentially landing in Chicago, Carolina, and Washington, thus far Cowher isn’t talking.

But according to Redskins beat reporter Chris Russell, sources close to Cowher have indicated that he would not be interested at this point in working for Redskins owner Dan Snyder, taking Washington out of the mix for his services and increasing the likelihood of a deal to coach the Panthers in the future (H/T to Football News Now)

We previously discussed a Cowher to Carolina deal last month, breaking down a multitude of factors that could positively impact the Panthers chances of landing Cowher, if they decide to remove current head coach John Fox from his position. At the time, it seemed as though all the right things were falling into place for Cowher to make his come back with Carolina, but depending on what the Bears decide to do with Lovie Smith, Chicago could definitely make a strong push to get Cowher into the fold and running the show.

As always, we’ll keep you posted when more information breaks on this and the other stories we’re following.

Schefter on future coaches, AP, Colts

As usual, ESPN’s Adam Schefter has the scoop on just about everything of importance in the NFL. Here’s the run down of his latest post…

  • There will be a ton of solid assistant coaches to choose from this off-season for any team in need of a new head coach. Some of the more intriguing names: Leslie Frazier (Vikings), Russ Grimm (Cardinals), Sean McDermott (Eagles, Brian Schottenheimer (Jets), and Hue Jackson (Ravens).
  • Adrian Peterson’s continued problem with fumbling the ball could eventually cost the Vikings, especially if it happens in the playoffs. Titans RB Chris Johnson may have already passed AP by as the league’s premier back.
  • The Colts look beatable and unbelievable at the same time. Potential is there for 16-0 season, if they can beat the Titans this week.

Johnson ready to eclipse Dickerson in record book

Titans RB Chris Johnson isn’t overly boastful about his talent as a runner, but he isn’t shy about it either.

So it comes as little surprise that he would have his eyes peeled for a run towards one of the most hallowed records in the NFL: the single season rushing yards mark set in 1984 by Rams RB Eric Dickerson. That season, Dickerson ran over, under, and around his opponents en route to 2,105 yards, and while several backs have come close in the interim, no one has been able to pass him by.

But all of that may change this year, as Johnson is set to rush for 2,030 yards this season, if he stays on his current pace of 126.9 yards per game over the final five weeks of the season. It’s definitely a plausible goal to reach on Johnson’s part, especially if he can replicate his production from November, when he rushed for 800 yards.

Johnson currently sits at 1,396 yards on the season, which is easily the highest mark in the league this year.

Titans roundup – Monday

There were a number of news items on Tennessee that hit the desk today, and after their crushing loss at home to the Ravens, it’s comes as little surprise. Here they are in no particular order:

  • QB Kerry Collins wants to come back as the Titans starter next season, but it’s doubtful that the team would pay Vince Young major cash to ride the bench next year. Tennessee head coach Jeff Fisher reiterated that point today, and laid the foundation for Young to become the starter once more.
  • The AP reported that RB Chris Johnson is having a MRI today to evaluate his injured ankle, and while the team has been careful to label it a high ankle sprain, his status for the Pro-Bowl in February is most certainly in doubt.
