Militants Killed In Clashes With Tunisian Forces

At least 45 people, including civilians and a customs agent, were killed in clashes not far from a beach resort town near the Libya-Tunisia border. The ministry urged residents to stay indoors.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack and reiterated the U.N.'s commitment "to stand with the people of Tunisia as they confront the scourge of terrorism and work to preserve the gains of the revolution", his spokesman said.

Officials said the campaign followed raids in Libya against fighters of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group. Tunisia's fledgling democratic government is especially anxious after dozens of tourists were killed in extremist attacks in Tunisia a year ago.

Tunisian forces have repeatedly clashed with extremists on the borders of Libya and Algeria in recent years, but Monday's fighting was unusually bloody.

"The objective of the attack was to disrupt the security situation in our country and establish a Daesh emirate in Ben Guerdane", he said, using an Arabic acronym for IS.

"More than ever, France is determined to continue and intensify its cooperation with Tunisia in the fight against terrorism", he added.

It was the second deadly clash in the border area in less than a week as Tunisia battles to prevent the large number of its citizens who have joined IS in Libya from returning to carry out attacks at home.

"We have chose to impose a curfew in Ben Guerdane on both vehicles and pedestrians. starting from today [Monday] between 7pm [18:00 GMT] and 5am [04:00 GMT]", an interior ministry statement said.

Islamic State (IS) fighters in Libya claimed responsibility for an assault targeting a hotel that left 38 in June 2015.

At the end of February, IS militants captured by militias aligned with Libya's Western-backed government in Tripoli said they were planning a large scale assault on Ben Guerdane, Tunisia Live reported.

Last Wednesday, troops killed five armed men in a firefight outside the town in which a civilian was also killed and a commander wounded.

Essid said Tunisian security forces had achieved "positive results", noting that Tunisia estimates that 35 attackers are among the 53 dead. But it was the type of militant operation Tunisia's government has feared as it prepares for potential spillover from Libya, where Islamic State militants have gained ground.

"Most Tunisians are in a state of war against this recklessness, against these rats", he said, referring to the Islamic State.
