Commuter train derails in California; at least 14 injured

At least nine people were injured Monday evening when an Altamont Corridor Express commuter train derailed after striking a downed tree on the tracks in the Niles Canyon area of Alameda County near Fremont.

Kelly said that the crew had to fight the creek's fast-moving currents to pull riders from the partially submerged rail vehicle. A dispatcher for the Alameda County Fire Department said they received a report about a possible derailment at about 7:30 p.m. local time but could provide no further details.

Night-time footage shows one of the carriages half-submerged in water as rescue teams worked to free commuters near the town of Sunol, 45 miles south-east of San Francisco.

"It was dark, wet, it was raining". The department had been saying in the first hours after the crash that 14 people were injured.
