Sanders: After Clinton's big win, Super Tuesday, beyond will be 'tough fight'

Hillary Clinton resoundingly reclaimed her position as the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination with a commanding victory over Bernie Sanders in SC, giving her momentum heading into the key Super Tuesday contests.

"I think that winning in South Carolina is a big deal for her just because of what happened in 2008, but I also think that for Bernie, not doing well here, letting her win by 20 or 30 points, just proves his roadblock, which is diverse voting populations", Amanda Loveday, a former executive director of the South Carolina Democratic Party and a onetime spokesman for Assistant Minority Leader James Clyburn, D-S.C., told NPR earlier. Sanders' big win in low-population New Hampshire had already been cancelled out by narrow wins for Clinton in higher population Nevada and Iowa, and she won the pledged delegate count in SC 39-14.

Where Senator Barack Obama had easily beaten in the primary of 2008, Hillary Clinton was declared the victor by the American media as of the closing of polling stations, against the Senator from Vermont.

The result in SC establishes Mrs Clinton's strength among black voters, a crucial Democratic constituency who make up more than half the party's primary electorate in SC. But in SC, three-quarters of voters said Clinton is honest, more than the two-thirds who said the same of Sanders.

How to watch the Oscars

"We don't need to make America great again - America has never stopped being great", Clinton said in her victory speech (via CNN), taking on Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan.

"Instead of building walls, we need to be tearing down barriers", said Clinton, who would be America's first woman president. The truth is that Sanders can still win enough delegates from future states to clinch the nomination, but would have to defy poll numbers that show growing support nationwide for Clinton. "We are not taking anything for granted".

The former First Lady secured more than 73% of the vote in the South Carolina Democratic Primary, compared to 26% for Mr Sanders. "I think we can win this thing".

If elected, Sanders said he wants a government that works for working class families, not just the top 1 percent of the country. "Now it's on to Super Tuesday".

Kurdish group claims responsibility for Ankara attack
The official account, provided by the Turkish government, blamed the attacks on the YPG, a different Kurdish group based in Syria. Recent airstrikes by Russian and Syrian forces have prompted tens of thousands of Syrian refugees to flee to Turkey's border.

"On Super Tuesday, the state that is going to be voting for the most delegates is the great state of Texas", Sanders told the crowd at a Formula One racetrack.

Mr Sanders is hoping to stay close to his rival in the South while focusing most of his attention on states in the Midwest and Northeast, including his home state of Vermont. She capped off months of campaigning there with stops Friday at a popular soul food restaurant and bakery in Charleston, and a rally at a historically black college in Orangeburg. Unlike pledged delegates, superdelegates are free to choose who they will support, and the vast majority of those who have announced their choice are supporting Clinton; she now leads superdelegates by 445-18. "I congratulate Secretary Clinton on her victory, but..."

"But we do need to make America whole again", she added, laying out an argument against the divisive rhetoric favored by Trump, who has antagonized immigrants, Muslims and campaign rivals.

Democratic presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton arrive on stage at the PBS Democratic presidential debate in Milwaukee, Feb. 11, 2016. Unlike Clinton, who quickly quelled the small protest, Sanders moved to one side and allowed the activists to speak and voice their opinion. Clinton won by 4-to-1 among self-described Democrats. "Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose", Sanders said.
