The Saudi government signed an agreement in November 2014, according to which the French would supply arms to the Lebanese army worth $3 billion, to be paid for by the oil-rich kingdom.

"If other producers want to limit or agree to a freeze in terms of additional production, that may have an impact on the market, but Saudi Arabia is not prepared to cut production", Jubeir told AFP in an exclusive interview. The modernisation programme, known in France as Donas, aimed to ensure stability in a Lebanon weakened by internal divisions and threatened by jihadists.

The Lebanese March 14 political bloc, backed by Saudi Arabia, subsequently blamed Hezbollah and Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil for the suspensions.

Once over $100 a barrel, crude now sells at around $30, putting tremendous strain on Saudi Arabia, which has been burning through billions of its reserves.

Lebanon's daily As-Safir reported Saturday that the United Arab Emirates will deport more than 20 Lebanese, giving them only 48 hours notice to leave the country.
