Dulcet tones are the password to biometric banking

Anthony Duffy, Director of Retail Banking in UK & Ireland at Fujitsu, said: "Biometric-based security systems are highly accurate, cost-effective and scalable".

HSBC bank is set to launch voice recognition and fingerprint ID security services in Britain in an effort towards introducing biometric banking, the media reported on Friday.

HSBC is technically not the first bank to introduce voice recognition, as Barclays already does it on a small scale for some customers, however HSBC will be the first to roll it out to all its customers.

Atom Bank is a little ahead of the game, allowing customers to log-in to accounts using face recognition.

Using a fingerprint to login will also be available to the bank's customers.

They include the speed, cadence and pronunciation as well as physical aspects such as shape of larynx, vocal tract and nasal passage.

Customers who opt in will simply be required to enrol their "voice print" and will no longer need to recite their current telephone security password letters or PIN.

She said: "While this is the largest roll out of voice ID in the United Kingdom banking, other industries will soon follow our lead".

This new technology comes as research reveals that 37% of Brits agree that traditional passwords have become an outdated security measure, and one in three people will use the same password across most of their accounts.

Joe Gordon, UK head of customer contact at HSBC, told the Beeb: "We will be able to cope with people who have got colds or slight impediments".

The feature would accompany Touch ID, which is available on Apple iPhone 5s models and newer, and which HSBC or First Direct customers can use by downloading the mobile banking app and following instructions to link their fingerprint to their bank account.

It said it would make the service available to all of its customers in the near future.
