Don't donate blood if you've traveled to Mexico, officials say

Zika is a mosquito-borne virus that may cause devastating birth defects if contracted during pregnancy. As many as 3,500 Zika cases have been reported in Brazil.

Until more is known, the CDC recommends special precautions for women who are pregnant (in any trimester) to consider postponing travel to any area where Zika virus transmission is ongoing. It did not, however, update its total of 41 cases in which it said that microcephaly had been linked by laboratory tests to Zika infections. The UN agency said that this sum included the fast-tracking of diagnostics, vaccine and researches associated with the virus.

The Virginia Department of Health says there are now three cases of Zika here in the Commonwealth.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said that it wants to implement a strategic plan to combat the surge of Zika virus infections but this comes with a huge price: $56 million. The WHO expects the funds to come from states and other donors and said that in the meantime it has tapped a new emergency contingency fund for $2 million for initial operations.

The previous counts, the ministry said, "did not adequately represent the number of cases observed".

The WHO noted that "existing scarce evidence indicates that there may be a risk of sexual transmission" of Zika virus, as well as a risk of it persisting in semen and urine. A direct link between Zika virus and microcephaly has not been established, but studies continue.

As reported in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, Ana de Filippis (Oswaldo Cruz Institute in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and team studied two women (aged 27 and 35) who had displayed symptoms of Zika infection including rashes, fever and muscle pain during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Outbreaks of Zika virus infection previously took place in Africa, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands.
