In recent years, the wide receiver position has seemingly taken the biggest hit in terms of first round status, with multiple players starting their journey to the draft with high expectations, only to watch as teams pass them by in favor of more secure selections.
This year is shaping up to be no exception, with former Oklahoma State receiver Dez Bryant dropping like a rock over the past few weeks, given the off the field issues and his attitude on it. Bryant was projected to be a top 15 pick by most analysts a few months ago, but has since done little to silence his critics and put forward what looks to be a disastrous showing this morning at his Pro Day.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Bryant apparently clocked in with a 4.57 forty yard dash, disappointing many scouts and front office officials present to watch him work out. That time would be okay if Bryant were a linebacker or a tight end, but as a wide receiver, running that slow sends up major red flags for most clubs, and it will likely cost him a significant amount of money on draft day as a result.
Obviously, Bryant could still resurrect his status if he is able to enamor a team or two prior to the draft, and it’s likely that he’ll still be selected in round one, unlike similar players in past years who dropped out of the top 32 picks completely after poor showings at their Pro Day.
