Updated: Mock Draft Round One

Now that the regular season is gone away, the hot stove season of the NFL Draft and Free Agency are starting to ramp up. NFLNR is no stranger to covering either one, especially the draft, and we’ve started to update our mocks twice a week to account for any news that hits the wire.

The order for the 2010 NFL Draft is based on the final win/loss standings. All tiebreakers were determined by the strength of schedule, as posted here. Playoff teams are denoted by * and the final order for those teams will be determined once the postseason is complete.

Here’s a taste of what we’ve got going on in our mocks… feel free to comment as you like, and continue on through to the entire first round and second round as well.

* Updated on 01/15/10

1. Jimmy Clausen (Quarterback – Notre Dame)

Passing on taking Suh here may come back to bite the Rams in a bad way, but I think the need to get a franchise QB is too great to ignore. Clausen has all the ability to become an elite talent at the next level, and should fare well if St. Louis gives him enough weapons to work with.

Previous pick: Same

2. Ndamukong Suh (Defensive Tackle – Nebraska)

There is almost no way that the Lions would not select Suh if they get the chance, as he could potentially be the savior of the franchise with his amazing skill level and talent. He would immediately upgrade both the pass rush and the run defense up front, making things much easier for Detroit’s secondary.

Previous pick: Same

3. Gerald McCoy (Defensive Tackle – Oklahoma)

With Suh off the board, the Bucs would be wise to turn their attention towards McCoy, who could become the premier DT that they’ve been missing ever since Warren Sapp jumped ship for Oakland. A selection of Eric Berry here wouldn’t be bad either.

Previous pick: Same

4. Russell Okung (Offensive Tackle – Oklahoma State)

Okung may not be the sexy pick that a lot of fans want, but if there’s one thing Mike Shanahan is known for having, it’s a solid offensive line taking care of business in the trenches. The rebuilding project has to start somewhere, and it might as well be there.

Previous pick: Same

5. Eric Berry (Safety – Tennessee)

The Chiefs have a major need in their secondary, and Berry certainly fits that bill. He’s capable of making plays all over the field and has the size and fearless mentality to come up and make an impact against the run. Romeo Crennel is going to have fun coaching him up next season.

Previous pick: Same

6. Taylor Mays (Safety – USC)

Now that Pete Carroll’s running around town, a selection of one of his former star pupils wouldn’t surprise me, even with major needs at other key positions. Then again, Mays has the talent to become an elite safety at the next level, and that makes him worth a pick here.

Previous pick: Bruce Campbell (OT)

7. Bruce Campbell (Offensive Tackle – Maryland)

John St. Clair isn’t the solution at right tackle, and while I think the Browns biggest issues are on defense, a selection of Campbell would give them two of the best young tackles in the league today with Joe Thomas manning the left side of the line.

Previous pick: Trent Williams (OT)

8. Joe Haden (Cornerback – Florida)

Putting Haden across from Nnamdi Asomugha could prove to be a genius move, given Haden’s size, strength, and overall talent. His measurables definitely won’t hurt his stock in Al Davis’ eyes either, especially if he runs well at the combine.

Previous pick: Taylor Mays (S)

9. Rolando McClain (Linebacker – Alabama)

The Bills need to upgrade their offensive line in a bad way, but with McClain still on the board, there’s no way they can pass on him here. McClain is super intelligent, relentless in his pursuit, and strong enough to fight through blocks on a consistent basis, all of which seem to be in short supply in Buffalo.

Previous pick: Bryan Bulaga (OT)

10. Dez Bryant (Wide Receiver – Oklahoma State)

Jacksonville has been adamant that they won’t allow marketing efforts to sway their decision on who to draft next spring, and if that holds true, the Jags will likely pass on taking Tim Tebow here. That said, their offense still needs an upgrade, and adding Bryant definitely won’t hurt in that regard.

Previous pick: Rolando McClain (LB)
