Cribbs: Return to Cleveland unlikely right now

Josh Cribbs has said all the right things this season with regards to his contract situation in Cleveland. But that could be all for naught if newly hired team president Mike Holmgren chooses to go in a different direction in the coming weeks, and that is exactly what seems to be happening right now.

Cribbs posted two tweets to his Twitter account earlier this evening that definitely paint a not so pretty picture of his relationship (or lack thereof) with Holmgren these days, and while it remains to be seen if a parting of ways will actually take place, the likelihood of Cribbs getting a new deal seems far fetched as it currently stands.

Thanks everyone, I love playing for the browns & put my all in to it, but it doesn’t look good 4me at this point on returning…”

I don’t believe I made the to do list for the team in 2010….”

– Cleveland returner/wide receiver Josh Cribbs

For his part, Holmgren has professed a desire to hammer out a new contract with the superstar playmaker, but given the tone that Cribbs has set with those two tweets, it’s beginning to look as though the two sides are too far apart to ever reach a new agreement. Cribbs signed a six year extension with the Browns back in 2006, but that deal is clearly benefiting Cleveland more than Cribbs, as he is severely underpaid for the level of production he provides to the Browns offense and special teams.

Cribbs has made it fairly clear in the past that if no new agreement can be reached before the 2010 season commences, he’ll be more than happy to sit out the season until the team makes him a fair offer. Obviously, much of that is grandstanding on his side, but there is some measure of commitment in that approach, and seeing as Cribbs was the only weapon the Browns had throughout much of the 2009 season on offense, it’s imperative that Holmgren do his part to woo Cribbs back to the table sooner rather than later.
