Weis may be an option in Buffalo

11:30 am: You can file this update under pure speculation, but interesting none the less… according to FootballCoachScoop.com, Kansas City has already offered Weis a job as their offensive coordinator underneath head coach Todd Haley, pending his expected dismissal/buyout in South Bend.

The guys over at South Bend Tribune posted a similar premise, albeit without the guaranteed offer of a job, and so it may have more truth to it than I initially thought.  Given Weis’ established relationship with GM Scott Pioli and others around the league, his return to the NFL coaching ranks seems relatively secure at this point.

5:45 am: Don’t laugh too hard Bills fans… this one isn’t as absurd as it seems.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter (Insider subscription required), the Bills may take a look at embattled Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis in their search to fill the same position with the club, if he is fired from his post with the Fighting Irish at the end of this season.

We previously reported that the Bills will meet with former Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan at some point this week, but will likely wait until the off-season to make a final decision.

While a lackluster record at the college level typically won’t help in achieving a promotion to the pro level, Weis’ situation is rather unique in that he went to Notre Dame after a tremendous run with the New England Patriots as Bill Belichick’s offensive coordinator. Weis is widely credited for successfully molding QB Tom Brady into the future Hall of Fame player that he is today, and that alone may give Buffalo enough pause to bring Weis in for an interview.

Schefter also raises a valid point in that the Bills have already had discussions with Weis in the past about him becoming their head coach, prior to hiring current Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey in that role, and while that information may no longer be relevant given Weis’ horrible stint in South Bend, it could help Buffalo make a decision much quicker.

All in all, we already have the makings of what looks to be an exciting off-season, with the Bills already on the hunt for their next coach. As always, we’ll keep you posted…
