First mock of the year!
Prognosticating about how a team will draft is difficult enough to do a day before the event; trying to do it six months before is basically impossible. That being said, we’re doing it anyway, and I’m excited to post the first of many mocks for your reading pleasure.
Right now it’s just the first 16 picks, but we’ll be back soon enough with the rest of round one, and hopefully a second round as well. For now, enjoy these picks and don’t hesitate to say what you think in the comment thread!
Here’s the first five picks… you can get the rest after the jump!
Draft order is based on NFLNR’s week five power rankings
1. Sam Bradford (QB) – Oklahoma
With Mark Bulger on the verge of retirement, a major QB acquisition will be a must, in spite of the opportunity to upgrade other areas with this pick. Bradford has the ability to make all the throws, but injury concerns could drop him down a bit, depending on how he finishes this season.
2. Russell Okung (OT) – Oklahoma St.
The Chiefs offensive line is atrocious and now that common sense has finally been restored in the GM’s office, there is no way that KC will pass on addressing that issue, especially after watching their $63 million man in Matt Cassel get crushed all season long.
3. Jimmy Clausen (QB) – Notre Dame
The Browns have dumped a ton of cash on both Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson in the past three years, but neither player has done anything to prove their worth as of late. Clausen is pretty similar to Quinn, but unlike the latter, he seems to have what it takes to win in duress and that’s exactly what Cleveland need right now.
4. Eric Berry (S) – Tennessee
It’s pretty much a given that the Bucs need to upgrade their defense in a bad way, and Berry is by far the best player on that side of the ball for my money. He would immediately upgrade Tampa’s secondary, and give them a tremendous playmaker a la Ed Reed to create turnovers and cause havoc all over the field.
5. Carlos Dunlap (DE) – Florida
One of the Titans biggest problems this year has been their inability to get after the quarterback. That has led to their secondary allowing big play after big play, and while they could take a CB here, I think Dunlap is way too good to pass on here.
