According to multiple sources, the Philadelphia Eagles have reached an agreement with former Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Vick on a two year deal. Vick is expected to join the Eagles on Friday for practice.

The move to get Vick is definitely not without controversy, given his role in a major dogfighting scandal, and so we’re bound to hear more on this soon. As always, we’ll be there to bring the news to you when it breaks, so keep it locked here for all the latest.

Here’s the latest training camp buzz from around the league this morning…

  • The Jets are happy with the progress that LB Vernon Gholston has made thus far, according to Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post. Gholston had an awful rookie campaign last season, but he’ll have every opportunity to succeed under first year head coach Rex Ryan, who loves players with freakish size and potential.
  • Former Bucs LB Derrick Brooks is set to visit the Saints tonight, and hopes he can sign a deal very soon, according to Mike Reiss of Boston.com (via Twitter).

Smith out two weeks for Panthers

According to the Charlotte Observer, Panthers WR Steve Smith will likely miss two weeks of practice and pre-season action after injuring his shoulder during routine drills earlier today.

Smith’s agent delivered the prognosis, stating emphatically that his client would definitely be out of action for a minimum of two weeks, despite the team’s more optimistic analysis, which showed no major damage to Smith’s shoulder.

WR Dwayne Jarrett is expected to get most of the reps with the Panthers’ first team unit while Smith is out, and Carolina’s coaching staff is hopeful he’ll make the most of the opportunity.

D-Bowe riding the bench in KC

Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star is reporting that WR Dwayne Bowe has been relegated to the bench by Chiefs head coach Todd Haley, in an attempt to get Bowe to respond better to the team’s new approach to conditioning in training camp.

Haley has instituted a much more intense practice schedule since his arrival in Kansas City, pushing the team to become a more focused and intelligent squad, after posting a 6-26 record over the past two seasons.

While it’s fairly obvious that Bowe will be on the field in week one for the Chiefs, given their lack of talent offensively, it’s not a good sign that he hasn’t put forward the effort needed to impress his new coach. We’ll keep an eye out to see if his approach to the new regime changes over the next day or two.

First round contract update

With training camps getting started across the board this weekend, I thought it would be good to get a post going that outlines the current contract discussions (or lack thereof) between this year’s first round picks and their respective teams.

I’ll try to keep the list updated as new contracts are finished, but just in case I miss one, feel free to give me a shout via the comment section.

* Updated – August 10th @ 9:35 am CST

2:55 pmNFL Fanhouse is reporting that the 49ers front office and Crabtree’s agent have both refuted the earlier report that claimed Crabtree was prepared to re-enter the draft next year.

2:20 pm – According to Pro Football Talk, 49ers WR Michael Crabtree is fully prepared to sit out this season and re-enter the draft next year.

Crabtree is determined to be paid as though he was selected with one of the top three picks, and apparently he’s decided the pull out his ace card in hopes of getting his way.

That being said, neither side can afford to let his threat come to pass, as it would be a PR nightmare for both.

Ravens lose Clayton to injury

Adam Schefter of ESPN.com is reporting (via Twitter) that Ravens WR Mark Clayton will miss four to six weeks after he injured his hamstring in practice.

Baltimore already has major issues with the depth in its receiving corps and this news certainly doesn’t help in that regard. They’ll probably bring a free agent or two into camp in the next few days to give QB Joe Flacco more options in the passing game.

Douglas carted off practice field

9:25 pm – Adam Schefter of ESPN.com is reporting (via Twitter) that Douglas has a torn ACL in his knee and will likely miss the entire season as a result.

This is a huge blow to the Falcons offense, especially with White still fighting it out with the front office.

4:50 pm – The Falcons released a short statement from head coach Mike Smith on Douglas’ injury and it doesn’t look good for Atlanta right now. Smith confirmed the initial diagnosis of it being a knee injury but stopped short of speculating any further on a possible prognosis.

3:05 pm – WR Harry Douglas was forced to leave practice today after he suffered an injury to his left leg during one-on-one passing drills, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Jets grab Allison off waivers

Former Vikings WR Aundrae Allison has been claimed from the waiver wire by the New York Jets, according to his agent Drew Rosenhaus (via Twitter), and is expected to contribute immediately.

The Jets have been searching for an impact player across from WR Jerricho Cotchery for some time now, but Allison isn’t likely to be that just yet. He does offer the Jets a solid speed option in the passing game, along with a potential game breaker on special teams.

Steve Korte of the Belleville News-Democrat recently spoke with Rams WR Ronald Curry about his time in Oakland, and came away with several interesting quotes that point the finger of blame squarely at former Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin (H/T to Just Blog Baby).

Here’s what Curry had to say:

“I came back to camp and I’m fourth on the depth chart after leading the team in receiving the last couple of years,” Curry said. “That kind of blew me (away). It kind of bothered me. I felt like I had put myself in a position where I shouldn’t have been treated like that.”

“He (Kiffin) puts you in the slot and expects you to do the same thing, but they run no plays for the slot,” Curry said. “To me, when it’s third-and-five or six, or less, you let that slot go to work. It was a block-first offense. You go out there, you block, block, block, block, and at the end of the day you wonder why no receivers have more than 20, 30 yards.”

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer is reporting that NFL commisioner Roger Goodell has not decided upon a specific suspension for Browns WR Donte Stallworth as of yet, and nothing is expected any time soon.

Stallworth met with Goodell earlier today to discuss his role in the death of Mario Reyes, who was struck by Stallworth’s vehicle early in the morning in Miami, Florida. Stallworth reportedly brought the surveillance video captured by Miami Power & Light at the intersection where the accident occurred, possibly in an attempt to prove that he had no ability to prevent the incident from occurring.

At this time, it’s highly unlikely that Stallworth will be allowed to play this season, given the league’s harsh outlook on matters of this sort as of late. Stallworth has already finished 24 days of jail time and will spend two years on house arrest, eight years on probation and lose his driver’s license for life.

Matt Maiocco is reporting (via Twitter) that San Francisco QB Alex Smith has been impressive thus far during training camp, and is currently in line to win the starting role for the 49ers this season.

Obviously, there’s a whole lot more football to played in practice and in pre-season contests before 49ers head coach Mike Singletary declares Smith the winner of the competition, but the team’s front office and coaching staff have to be encouraged that Smith is playing well, given the abysmal start to his career.

Smith was selected #1 overall in the 2005 draft, but has thus far failed to live up to the expectations placed upon him by the 49ers and their fans, playing in just seven games over the past two seasons.
