Burress indicted on multiple charges
1:10 pm – John Eligon and Joseph Berger of the New York Times posted district attorney Robert M. Morgenthau’s initial reaction to the indictment in their recap of today’s events. Morgenthau publicly lobbied for the indictment to be consistent with similar cases and not to be relaxed due to Burress’ celebrity status.
Here’s what Morgenthau had to say:
“The case required a more protracted investigation than does a typical weapons possessions case, given the number of witnesses and the need to investigate events both before and after the shooting,” the Manhattan district attorney, Robert M. Morgenthau, said in a statement. “The case was treated like any similar case against any other defendant. Ultimately, the grand jury did what it thought was fair.”
1:00 pm – According to Sal Paolantonio of ESPN, Giants LB Antonio Pierce has been cleared of any potential charges, as the grand jury decided not to include him in the indictment.
12:55 pm - Adam Schefter is reporting (via Twitter) that former New York Giants WR Plaxico Burress has been indicted by the grand jury in New York City on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and one count of reckless endangerment in the second degree.
This is a developing story and we’ll have more as it breaks, but for now, suffice it to say that Burress’ short-term future in the NFL is no more. Prison time and an extended suspension from the league are most likely to occur, given these charges and likely conviction.
