Giants place Pierce on IR; career in jeopardy?

Tue 4:40 pm – Pierce expects to make a complete recovery and that he’ll be playing in New York when he hits the field next September.

Mon 5:30 pm - Giants LB Antonio Pierce has been stalwart for New York’s defense over the past five seasons, averaging close to 75 tackles a year from his middle linebacker position, and honorably wearing the badge of captain for his team each week.

But a bulging disc in his neck has pushed him out of the Giants’ plans this season, and could possibly derail the remainder of his career, according to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News.

Pierce was first diagnosed with the condition two weeks ago, and was hopeful that he could make a comeback later on this season to help the Giants make a run through the playoffs. After undergoing further testing this week though, his doctors found no improvement to the disc and New York placed him on the injured reserve list as a result.

Pack attack: Harris, Kampman out for good with knee injuries

In the NFL, winning almost always comes with a cost, in one way or another. Green Bay’s win over the 49ers yesterday was no exception, as the Packers lost two of their best defenders in the process.

According to Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, CB Al Harris and DE/LB Aaron Kampman are finished for the remainder of the season after they both suffered major knee injuries. Both will have surgery to repair the damage, and will be placed on the injured reserve list some time this week.

While Kampman has struggled tremendously in adjusting to the new 3-4 style of play being employed in Green Bay this season, Harris has always been a reliable cover corner, capable of playing the man-to-man defense the Packers love to use. His loss pushes CB Tramon Williams into the starting role, with Kampman’s replacement still being determined by head coach Mike McCarthy and his coaching staff.

Gone in 15 seconds; Colts lose Jackson to freak knee injury

Life in the NFL goes by at the blink of an eye, and the knee injury suffered by the Colts starting CB Marlin  Jackson yesterday illustrates that principle to a tee.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jackson was injured on the final play of the team’s practice on Wednesday, and was later diagnosed with a torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in his knee. The remainder of his season will be finalized in the near future, as Indianapolis is almost certain to place Jackson on the injured reserve list.

Jackson is likely to have surgery to repair the tear sometime next week, but his future with the Colts is somewhat murky at this point, given his status as a free agent next spring. Suffering an injury like this is definitely not a good way to convince a club to extend a better contract offer, so  Indianapolis will probably be able to re-sign him at a much lower cost than initially projected.
