Washington still on the hunt for Sam Bradford

Over the past few years, trading up to the #1 overall pick has become a fleeting ghost of history, with teams being extremely reluctant to part with the compensation package needed to move that high in the draft.

But that hasn’t stopped teams from discussing potential trades involving the top selection, and this year is no exception, with the Redskins reportedly pushing hard to switch spots with the Rams tonight to take Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford.

Citing several sources around the league, NFL Fanhouse’s Dan Graziano is reporting that Washington is making a late push this morning to convince St. Louis to give up their stranglehold on the #1 pick. Apparently, the Redskins are using multiple players already on their roster to entice the Rams into the trade, with the most likely candidates for such a deal being quarterback Jason Campbell and defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.

Giving up both players along with the #4 overall selection would definitely be a steep price to pay for Washington, but considering the fact that they’re already on the trading block anyway, it wouldn’t be all that much to stomach from the Redskins point of view.

Trade options for Jason Campbell expanding

With Donovan McNabb in the fold as the starting quarterback in Washington for the next season at the very least, it’s safe to say that last year’s starter, Jason Campbell, will be headed elsewhere to find playing time very soon.  The Redskins have made no secret of their desire to trade Campbell prior to, or during this year’s draft, even allowing Campbell and his agent to seek out potential trading partners on their own.

Two of the likely front runners for his services are Oakland and Buffalo, who both failed to snatch McNabb from Philadelphia, in spite of repeated attempts to do so. Campbell is fairly mobile, so he should be a decent fit in Bills head coach Chan Gailey’s spread style attack, although it’s hard to imagine such an offense succeeding long term in a league full to the brim with elite talent on defense.

Oakland is a possibility, given that team officials are currently stuck with the prospect of having to start JaMarcus Russell at quarterback this season, even though his weight and attitude have clearly ballooned way out of proportion, and he has become more of a liability for the team than a positive factor.

The Raiders do have journeyman quarterback Bruce Gradkowski hanging around, but other than that, there’s no real option to run the show offensively, and as such, an acquisition of Campbell wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing.

Philadelphia Eagles Trade Donovan McNabb to Washington Redskins

It finally happened.

In a shocker that surely has Redskins fans feeling a good aura over their team for the first time in the past two years, Washington has acquired quarterback Donovan McNabb from their division rivals in Philadelphia, in exchange for the 37th overall pick this year, and a conditional 2011 fourth round pick that could potentially be a third round pick.

This almost certainly spells the end of Jason Campbell’s tenure as a starter, and he will begin to receive serious attention on the trading block in the near future.

The price tag for Campbell will likely be a third or fourth rounder, considering the difference between himself and McNabb.

Washington to tender Campbell; trade in the works?

In their first major move since hiring Mike Shanahan as head coach, the Redskins have decided to offer quarterback Jason Campbell a contract, keeping him locked in as a restricted free agent this off-season, and setting the stage for a potential trade to a team in need of a new QB.

According to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post, the tender has not yet been offered to Campbell, but is expected within the next few days, and will likely be high enough to force any team looking to acquire Campbell to give up a valuable pick in the second or third round of this year’s draft.

Campbell struggled immesely last season as the starter in Washington, but some feel that Shanahan would be a positive influence for him this year, and a trade involving him would force the team to start over with a rookie or inexperienced player at the position.

Teams likely to be interested in obtaining Campbell include St. Louis, Cleveland, Seattle, and Oakland.

Redskins without Samuels next week

Redskins beat writer Rick Maese is reporting (via Twitter) that OT Chris Samuels will likely be unavailable for next week’s contest against the winless Kansas City Chiefs, and Stephen Heyer will take his spot on the field.

This is good news for KC, and really bad news for Washington, as Samuels is easily their best blocker up front. If he can’t go, the Chiefs should be able to mount fairly consistent pressure on Jason Campbell, which bodes well for them finally getting into the win column.

Thomas, Kelly turning heads in Redskins camp

Jason Reid of the Washington Post recently spoke with Redskins QB Jason Campbell about second year receivers Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly, and apparently the two are showing significant progress in their development thus far into training camp.

Here’s what Campbell had to say in the interview:

“You could just see the development and the improvement. You could see the change in their approach and their understanding about the game. With Devin, he’s going into his second year in the league and I think he’s getting some things figured out. And Malcolm … the key with Malcolm is just to keep him on the field and keep that knee right.”

“Those guys are going to be so important, and I really feel we can depend on them and lean on them this season. And Fred, Fred has a lot of talent. He can be a guy who we really take advantage of with Chris Cooley. These are talented guys, and I just saw a lot from them to be real optimistic about. I wouldn’t say that if I didn’t believe it.”

Campbell wants out if Redskins take a QB in draft

According to a source close to the situation in Washington, Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell will seek a trade out of town if the team decides to draft another player at his position during this weekend’s draft. It’s not known if that would include a late round pick to provide depth or simply a top level talent capable of challenging Campbell for his starting job.

Washington has made no secret of it’s infatuation with USC quarterback Mark Sanchez, and speculation has been running rampant all week long that the Redskins will do whatever they can to trade up into the top five selections in the draft to ensure themselves an opportunity to select him. If the team does in fact make a move like that, they may have to trade Campbell anyway, just to have enough firepower to pull off the deal.

Redskins looking to move up in draft; sights set on Sanchez

Earlier this week, the Redskins front office brass sat down with reporters to discuss their pre-draft thought process, albeit without handing out much information in the process. Owner Dan Snyder and GM Vinny Cerrato stayed very calm and collected throughout the press conference, revealing a few subtle hints at what they’d like to see happen in the draft, without giving away their entire strategy.

The main focus was squarely on Washington’s supposed interest in moving up to obtain standout USC quarterback Mark Sanchez; something that Snyder has done little to suppress recently. Snyder has been fairly forthcoming on the matter of his starting QB, and expects his team will contend for the Super Bowl soon, especially if that starting QB is able to eliminate the mistakes that plagued the team last year in their disastrous second half of the season.

“Obviously we were disappointed with some of our late-season games last year,” Snyder said. “We got close, as everyone knows, we got beaten up in terms of injuries, but that’s no excuse. I think we’re positioned pretty well to improve.”

“We’re doing what we can to win,” the owner added. “I’m always going to be aggressive to try to win. I didn’t buy the team for investment. I bought the team to try to win the Super Bowl, and that’s what I’m trying to do.”
