Haynesworth heads back to huddle, trouble in Washington

The past few months haven’t been kind to Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, with a new coaching staff bringing a new defensive scheme that leaves the former All-Pro playing in a spot he immensely dislikes.

In turn, Haynesworth pushed hard for a trade to a team that would let him play in his more natural position in the 4-3, even going so far as to refuse to join his team during mandatory team activities recently, leading to a tremendous amount of bantering back and forth between Haynesworth and his teammates in the media.

That said, reconciliation seems to be in the works, with Haynesworth deciding to report last week, in spite of his differences with the club. For now, he’ll take his spot along the Redskins defensive front in the nose tackle role, although a switch to a more comfortable spot as a 3-4 defensive end may be the best option, according to NFL.com’s Brian Baldinger.

Unfortunately for Haynesworth, his return won’t be without difficulty, as he’s reportedly been sued by a bank in his home state of Tennessee. Clayton Bank & Trust, based primarily out of Knoxville (home of Haynesworth’s alma mater in the Tennessee Volunteers), is claiming Haynesworth hasn’t paid his payments on a loan he took out from the bank last June.

Shanahan: Haynesworth trade “not going to happen.”

Over the past week, there’s been a multitude of rumors floating around claiming the Redskins would be all too eager to send defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth packing for a new home, and while team officials in Washington have remained adamant that there’s no way that would happen, it simply made too much sense not to explore it.

That said, it’s likely that the final nail in that coffin was put into place this afternoon, with Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan speaking on the subject with the folks over at NFL Network, saying pretty clearly that “it’s not going to happen.”

Given the way the first round played out, I tend to agree, with Detroit taking defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh at #2 overall, removing that need from their board. It’s possible that the Titans and the Raiders could make a push to get Haynesworth in the fold, potentially trading a third round pick and something else to get him on their side, but for now, it seems as though the chances of that happening are slim to none.

Washington still on the hunt for Sam Bradford

Over the past few years, trading up to the #1 overall pick has become a fleeting ghost of history, with teams being extremely reluctant to part with the compensation package needed to move that high in the draft.

But that hasn’t stopped teams from discussing potential trades involving the top selection, and this year is no exception, with the Redskins reportedly pushing hard to switch spots with the Rams tonight to take Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford.

Citing several sources around the league, NFL Fanhouse’s Dan Graziano is reporting that Washington is making a late push this morning to convince St. Louis to give up their stranglehold on the #1 pick. Apparently, the Redskins are using multiple players already on their roster to entice the Rams into the trade, with the most likely candidates for such a deal being quarterback Jason Campbell and defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.

Giving up both players along with the #4 overall selection would definitely be a steep price to pay for Washington, but considering the fact that they’re already on the trading block anyway, it wouldn’t be all that much to stomach from the Redskins point of view.

Lions angling for addition of Albert Haynesworth?

There’s been a bevy of discussion over the past few weeks surrounding Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, with Washington apparently looking to send Haynesworth packing just one year removed from signing him to one of the largest free agent contracts in NFL history.

Multiple rumors have put the Titans, Lions, and Raiders at the forefront of any such talks to acquire Haynesworth and while Tennessee and Oakland still have the ability and need to get a playmaking defensive tackle such as Haynesworth, the new leader for his services seems to be Detroit.

According Nicholas Cotsonika of the Detroit Free Press, the Lions are definitely interested in bringing Haynesworth into the fold, and feel confident he would fit in with the club given his experience working with head coach Jim Schwartz, during their tenure with the Titans.

The Lions could theoretically use the #2 overall pick to take offensive tackle Russell Okung and then send their third round pick (#66 overall) to Washington to get Haynesworth, who would immediately slot in as a starter next to Corey Williams, and provide the Lions with the penetrating defensive tackle they need to take their defense to the next level.

Titans not interested in Haynesworth reunion

Recently we discussed the possibility of a trade involving Washington defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, and while we chalked much of the chatter up to speculation at the time, the possibility still remains that the Redskins could send Haynesworth elsewhere next season.

Since then, there has been some talk of Tennessee making a move to bring Haynesworth back to the team after a year’s hiatus, which wouldn’t necessarily be a bad move, considering the impact Haynesworth made on their defense during his stay with the Titans.

But for now, that rumor is lacking legs so to speak, with Tennessee head coach Jeff Fisher offering up an emphatic “no” in response to questions on any talks between the two clubs. That’s not to say that a trade won’t happen, but for the time being, it seems as though the Titans won’t be contending for Haynesworth’s services.

As always, we’ll keep you posted.

Oakland to make a run at Albert Haynesworth?

There’s been a bevy of discussion around the league concerning Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, and his reported refusal to adjust to the 3-4 defense being put into play in Washington this off-season. While nothing substantial has come as of yet, the possibility still remains that Haynesworth could find himself playing in a new locale next fall, and the most likely suspect to acquire him is not a surprise.

According to ESPN’s Bill Williamson, the best fit for such a trade would be the Oakland Raiders, who have a history of going after big name players, regardless of contractual issues, and have a definite need for a playmaking defensive tackle, which Haynesworth has shown himself to be in recent years.

All of this is speculation for the most part, but educated guesses are better than nothing at this point in the year, and while a deal could theoretically be struck later on in the summer, the best time for the Redskins to make a move with Haynesworth would be prior to or during the draft, when draft picks are at a premium.

Oakland would almost certainly have to part with their second round selection (#39 overall) to get Haynesworth into the fold, but aside from that, there’s not much standing in the way of owner Al Davis, who has a propensity for spending a fortune on players with name recognition around the league. And with Haynesworth having proven his ability in a similar style of defense during his tenure in Tennessee, moving out West to Oakland wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing for him.

Redskins Cleared of Tampering Allegations

The Washington Redskins have been cleared of all tampering charges regarding defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, the Associated Press has learned.

Haynesworth’s former team, the Tennessee Titans sent information to the NFL indicating that the Redskins may have contacted Haynesworth and his agent, Chad Speck before free agency officially began on February 27th, 2009. Washington naturally denied any wrongdoing.

Argueably the NFL’s top free agent this past offseason, Haynesworth left the Titans to sign a seven-year, $100 million contract with the Redskins. Had the Redskins been found guilty of tampering, the NFL could have imposed penalities of forfeited draft picks and/or significant fines.

Titans looking into tampering charge

Tampering is a charge that is thrown around a lot during this time of the year, especially after teams end up signing major contracts with free agent players a few short hours into the free agency period.

This year is no different, as Tennessee is currently pursuing evidence that would indicate that the Redskins tampered with DT Albert Haynesworth prior to the official free agency period commencing.

The signs are all there, given that Washington was somehow able to finalize a deal with Haynesworth just five hours after the start of free agency that will pay him well over $100 million by the end of the contract, but the hardest part is drumming up enough evidence to pin the charge on the team in question.

Obviously the team allegedly doing the tampering is not going to confess nor will the player who signed the contract. The burden of proof rests squarely on the shoulders of the accuser and that is a difficult task to overcome.

Collins, Titans close to new deal

Tennessee has made it abundantly clear this off-season that their top priority was to re-sign their free agents and then focus on any additions they may need to make.

As of right now, they’re batting .500

After losing DT Albert Haynesworth to the Redskins via a monster contract, the Titans turned to QB Kerry Collins this afternoon, and have apparently convinced him to sign with the club, despite their differences in salary figures just a few days ago.

ESPN’s Michael Smith is reporting that Tennessee has reached a two year agreement with Collins, and should finalize the deal later on this evening. Terms have not yet been disclosed.
