India Reacts To Death Of Adopted Toddler In Richardson

People in the USA city of Richardson are mourning and angry over the tragic death of 3-year-old Indian girl Sherin Mathews, with many asking why her foster father did not wake his nurse wife when he knew that the toddler was chocking on milk and struggling to breathe.

Tuesday, Richardson police made a plea for Sini to agree to speak with the police. The medical examiner is working to determine the cause of death.

His attorney did not immediately return a call on Tuesday requesting comment. He told police that he had ordered her to stand near a tree outside of their home at about 3 a.m.as punishment for not drinking her milk, and that she was gone when he went to check on her about 15 minutes later.

She then "began to choke".

"This by no means completes our investigation". Officers re-arrested him, setting his bail at $1 million on the felony Injury to a Child charge, and booked him into the Richardson City Jail. Mathews was previously charged with child endangerment but was free on bond and had to wear an ankle monitor.

Lawyer Bree West, a former Dallas County assistant district attorney who's not involved in the case, said that while most of the items collected at the Mathews home were pretty standard, some confiscated items - a blue string, dark hairlike fibres, vacuum contents, two yellow gloves, a dish scrubber inside two grocery bags and the washer and dryer - had stood out to her.

Richardson Police Department sergeant Kevin Perlich told reporters that they had previously searched the area near the culvert where Mathews' body was found on Sunday but had come up empty-handed. Police on Monday were waiting for confirmation that a body found over the weekend was that of the missing child, although Perlich said investigators have no reason not to believe the body found Sunday is that of Sherin Mathews.

He reportedly changed his story and told police his daughter choked and died while he was trying to get her to drink her milk in the garage. "She was coughing and her breathing slowed", the warrant reads. Mathews admitted to removing his adopted daughter's body from the house, the police affidavit said.

The affidavit does not say whether Mathews told police he administered any medical aid to the child. They put her on a special diet to help her gain weight, including eating in the middle of the night. Sherin went missing from her Richardson home on October 7. Police said they believe Sini Mathews was sleeping when the girl went missing and was unaware of the alleged punishment.
