Arsenal: Capable of Winning the Premier League Title?

Arsenal have enjoyed plenty of success during Arsene Wenger’s epic tenure at the helm but the Premier League title has eluded their grasp in recent seasons. In fact, it would be fair to claim that the Gunners have failed in their bid to build on the success of ‘the Invincibles’ as they have won just two FA Cup trophies since that unforgettable 2003-04 campaign.

And even then, they were overwhelming favourites in both cup finals at Wembley. You can only beat what is in front of you but Arsenal were well fancied to defeat Hull City and Aston Villa – and it wasn’t exactly a huge surprise to see these two clubs drop into the second tier of English football in the aftermath of their cup exploits; although the Tigers are now back in the top flight.

However, this Arsenal side have got something about them and a title triumph could be on the cards in the near future. Their big-name stars are either in or approaching their peak years and it is almost a case of ‘now or never’ for Wenger at the club. At 67 years old, time is running out on his managerial career and it would be ironically fitting for the Frenchman to sign out with a first Premier League crown in well over a decade.

Scoring goals has never been a problem for Wenger’s Arsenal and the Gunners are still one of the best teams in England for hitting the back of the net. As of January 12th, Arsenal have netted 44 goals in just 20 league games this season; a tally bettered only by that of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. To put their achievements into perspective, the Gunners are averaging 2.2 goals per game – their best offensive ratio since the 2004-05 campaign...

Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil have both been simply sublime in recent months but Olivier Giroud’s sudden rise to prominence should help Arsenal’s cause as they look to close the gap to Chelsea at the top. The Frenchman has now scored in each of the last four games and his scorpion flick in the two-nil victory over Crystal Palace will go down in Arsenal folklore as one of the greatest strikes in Premier League history.

At the time of writing, Betway are pricing the Gunners at 14/1 to win the title and Wenger will need to use all his experience to ensure that Arsenal maintain their incredible record of finishing in the top four at the very least. The Gunners are currently sat just one point behind fourth-placed Manchester City and Wenger knows how important securing a spot in Europe’s elite club competition is.

Defensively, Arsenal have improved since Shkodran Mustafi joined the club in the summer but there is still room for improvement. The Gunners have conceded 22 goals so far this campaign and Wenger will be demanding that his defensive stars remain focused for the business end of the season. If Arsenal can string a run of clean sheets together, there’s absolutely no reason why they cannot pile the pressure on those teams above them.

With plenty of points to be won and lost, the title race is still very much on and Arsenal will be confident of bridging the gap. Wenger has had to endure his fair share of criticism in recent times but more silverware would cement his position as the greatest manager in Gunners history. Arsenal have shown that they are capable of producing moments of magic already this campaign and a come-from-behind title success isn’t beyond the realms of possibility.
