Tim Tebow Signs With Mets

According to a report from ESPN, the Mets and Tebow came to terms on a deal this Wednesday, and with the contract now official, the 29-year-old former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy victor will play in the Mets' instructional league, which will begin September 18 and end October 8.

Tebow is under contract with ESPN to broadcast Southeast Conference football games again this fall, so even though he's scheduled to report to the Mets' instructional league camp on September 18, he'll be taking off one or two days each week for his real job.

Only two of Major League Baseball's 30 teams - the Chicago Cubs and the Oakland Athletics - did not attend his open workout at the University of Southern California.

After weeks of news stories covering former NFL quarterback and college football legend Tim Tebow trying to get into professional baseball, the Heisman Trophy victor has finally found a new team. He also spent one season with the New York Jets.

Tebow, who has worked for ESPN's SEC Network since 2013, will balance his new baseball career and his commitment to ESPN. Signing a 29-year-old who hasn't played since his prep days is unconventional enough.

Tim Tebow in the Big Apple?

Tebow is not a baseball deal, no matter how often Alderson insisted it was on a conference call with reporters. "We are part of the entertainment industry, and I think this will add some excitement to our spring", Mets general manager Steve Phillips said at the time. But one thing's for sure; there is a lot of interest now that Tebow has signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets. Alderson could not predict what would follow, with options including a place in the Arizona Fall League, another winter league, or continued individualized instruction.

Before he joined the Mets, Tebow had been linked to the Braves.

Tebow bristled at the notion of this being a publicity stunt.

Players who have played in both the NFL and Major League Baseball include Bo Jackson, Brian Jordan and Deion Sanders.

"I would consider success giving everything I have", Tebow said.

This is not a signing made with the expectation that Tebow will help that playoff run, as he will go to instructional league and start life as a professional baseball player like so many kids whose last taste of the game was in high school - just much more recently than his. "As an organization, we're going to provide that development opportunity for time". "I just want to be someone to pursue what I believe in, what I'm passionate about".

It's unclear where exactly Tebow will rank among his fellow prospects in the Mets' farm system, but he certainly comes in with the most name recognition.
