Euro 2016: 43 Russian Supporters in Custody in France, Say Officials

Jun 18, 2016, 11:12

French police on Tuesday detained 43 Russian football fans and believe some of them could be tried over Euro 2016 violence in Marseille, officials said.

The arrests followed a showdown between the Russians, who were in a bus in southern France heading for their country's next match in Lille, and French authorities.

Police surrounded the bus and forced the Russians to undergo identity checks.

No Russian nationals were arrested on Saturday when Russian and English supporters fought pitched battles in the Vieux Port area of Marseille.

But regional government official Adolphe Colrat said Marseille prosecutors believe they have enough proof to charge some of the supporters over the fighting, which was the worst violence at an international football tournament since the 1998 World Cup.

"We have sufficiently accurate information that at least some of them took part in the unacceptable violence," Colrat said.

France wants to deport nearly 50 Russians after seizing passports, said Alexander Shprygin, the head of a Russian supporters' group. What does this have to do with the team?

bad incidents at the end of the match with Russian Federation".

"UEFA expresses its utter disgust for the violent clashes that occurred in the city center of Marseille, and its serious concern for the incidents at the end of the match inside Stade Velodrome", UEFA said in a statement per The Associated Press.

The decision is open to appeal. "Many Russians are staying here, but they came only to us".

UEFA's executive committee issued that threat to the FA, and similarly to their Russian counterparts, with both sets of fans due to congregate in Lille this week ahead of their second group games.

It comes after the first fan to appear in a United Kingdom court over the trouble in France was handed a five-year football ban, after a police "spotter" in the United Kingdom saw video of the man "throwing a chair".

And UK police are also assisting the investigation into the Marseille melee by scouring CCTV, social media and press images to identify any fans who were involved, the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) said.

Five other fans appeared in court and received sentences and bans from the country for similar offences.
