Edmund to face Murray in quarter-final clash

Defending champion Andy Murray survived a stern test from Kyle Edmund to reach the Queen's Club semi-finals with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory over the British wildcard on Friday (June 17).

Slovenia-born Bedene, a United Kingdom citizen since 2015, saw his appeal to represent his country in the Davis Cup rejected earlier this year Murray will now face one of his title-winning British teammates in Kyle Edmund on Friday.

"I haven't got to play loads", Murray said.

"He's got a big game, he's a strong guy, and his mind is focused on tennis".

"I've done it in practice but I don't get up to the net as much as the older players, and you have to be careful because you can damage a wrist or shoulder." said Murray.

"I really like his coach, he's got a fantastic attitude and has him working extremely hard".

"Obviously Kyle's the future of the game in this country". It is important that he is given him time to come through at his own rate. It's been a steady progression with him, not one massive leap but every year he's getting a little bit better.

The No 1 seed won 6-4 3-6 6-1 in his quest for a record fifth Aegon Championships title.

Murray will play Marin Cilic in the last four, after the 2012 champion defeated American Steve Johnson.

The last time they faced off was in the quarter-final of the Beijing Open way back in 2014, the Scot went on to beat Cilic 6-1, 6-4.

The 21-year-old claimed an error-strewn second set to force a decider against Murray, before the world number two finally reasserted his authority to ease home.

Top-seeded Murray struggled to gain the upper hand against his Davis Cup teammate, wasting an early break in the first set before breaking again to lead 4-3.

"If you can go out and hit a few extra balls just to spend more time on the courts and improve your timing a little bit, it all adds up".

On another dreary June day, the two Brits exchanged early service breaks before Murray broke again to go 4-3 up with a dive volley victor reminiscent of Boris Becker in his heyday.

"He stepped it up in the third set. Grass suits my game and when I'm in good form I can always play really well", Cilic said.

American John Isner fired 43 aces and held 10 match points but failed to overcome Gilles Muller of Luxembourg as he slumped to a 3-6, 7-6 (16), 7-6 (7) defeat.

In the doubles, Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares lost in the quarterfinals 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4), 10-3 to Chris Guccione and Andre Sa.

Canadian third seed Milos Raonic advanced to the last eight for the second successive year with a 7-5, 7-6 (8/6) victory against Czech Jiri Vesely.

"It's a privilege for me to have season like that to look up to and to engage with on and off the court", Edmund told a press conference.
