Sylvia and Peter Stuart murder: Luxembourg arrest of suspect

Officers said Mrs Stuart's disappearance "is now being treated as a murder inquiry".

Ali Qazimaj, 42, sparked an global manhunt after fleeing the country following the stabbing of Peter Stuart, 75, and disappearance of his wife Sylvia, 69.

Ali Qazimaj was arrested in Luxembourg City last night and is now in custody in Luxembourg in connection with the murders of Peter and wife Sylvia - police are continuing the search for the body of Mrs Stuart.

Suffolk Police would like to thank the members of the public for their assistance with the appeal.

Mr Stuart was found dead in woodland just 50ft from his Suffolk home on June 3 - the same day he and his wife were reported missing.

He is now in custody in Belgium, after being found at a hostel in Luxembourg City last night where one of the staff recognised him and alerted police.

Mr Qazimaj, a Kosovan immigrant, went on the run around 24 hours after Mr Stuart's body was discovered on Friday June 3.

Mr and Mrs Stuart were keen line-dancers and were members of three clubs.

Officers are carrying out searches between the Stuarts' home and Tilbury, Essex, where suspect Ali Qazimaj lived.

Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Parkes, of Suffolk Police, said today that officers had no expectation of finding Sylvia alive and were treating her disappearance as murder. He then boarded a ferry on foot at 7pm the same day and travelled to Calais.

His abandoned vehicle was found in Dover by cops.

Mr Qazimaj was being hunted across Europe after abandoning his Citroën C3 vehicle in Dover to catch a ferry to Calais as a foot passenger.

Police believe Qazimaj is from war-scarred Kosovo.

On 5 June a 61-year-old man from Leicester was arrested in connection with the murder and bailed.

An worldwide manhunt was launched for asylum seeker Qazimaj - who has lived in Britain for around 15 years under a false name.

The last sighting of Mr and Mrs Stuart was at Goodies Farm Shop in Pulham Market, Norfolk, on the morning of Sunday, May 29.

British police said Qazimaj was from Kosovo and was given a United Kingdom passport following the conflict in the former Yugoslavia.
