Astronaut Scott Kelly lands in Houston after year in space

He was welcomed by second lady Jill Biden, his identical twin and former astronaut, Mark Kelly, and various NASA officials. "But for him it's been a long time, but it's great that he made it back safe", said friend Robert Tijerina.

"I missed everyone very much", Kelly said.

"I was excited to welcome Scott home and back to American soil after his year aboard the International Space Station".

In a NASA interview before starting back to Houston, Kelly said it was "amazing" to feel the cold air when the hatch of the capsule popped open after touchdown. Kelly and his Russian roommate for the past year, Mikhail Kornienko, landed in barren, frozen Kazakhstan at 04.26am GMT.

NASA's goal is to send a manned mission to Mars by 2035, prompting extensive research ahead of an epic roundtrip journey that could take 2½-years.

"The beer is from the president, actually, from the garden, and the apple pie is just from all Americans", she added, though the food and drink remained out of sight during the ceremony. On Thursday, July 16, 2015, a piece of space junk forced the three International Space Station astronauts, including Kelly, to seek emergency shelter in their Soyuz spacecraft docked to the station, in case they had to make a quick getaway.

The ISS trio leave behind Kopra, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and the European Space Agency's British astronaut Tim Peake.

Houston will be home for Scott Kelly for awhile, as he will be undergoing weeks and months of physical, biological and mental tests, according to NASA.

The post Astronaut's record orbit concludes with safe return appeared first on PBS NewsHour. It's the longest any US astronaut has been in space. Kelly has cited this period - when he was unable to return home to be with his family - as the time when the isolation of spaceflight felt most profound.

Kelly's girlfriend, Johnson Space Center public affairs representative Amiko Kauderer, and his two daughters, ages 20 and 12, rushed into his arms after he exited the NASA jet. Their mission has been part of an effort to study the physiological effects of long-term space travel on the human body.

But their missions are far from over as Kelly and Kornienko were both whisked to medical tents just after they touched down in Kazakhstan for tests where they attempted to stand, walk, jump, and navigate obstacles, which they would be called on to do immediately after touching down on Mars. "There's no greater privilege than serving your country however and wherever you might do it. This mission is the latest achievement in our country's space program, but it's not the last".
