Google donates $1 million to help fight Zika virus spread

The foundation said more work was needed to determine whether Culex mosquitoes in the wild already are carrying the virus as well as whether they can transmit Zika infections. Google engineers, designers, and data scientists are also now working with UNICEF to help map the outbreak.

"As a company whose mission is helping people find information, with a lot of experience in analysing large sets of data, we're in a good position to help - at scale and at speed".

Google's effort is aimed at improving the response of UNICEF and others in containing the mosquito-borne virus.

The CDC advises men who have traveled to the Zika-affected areas to wear condoms consistently and correctly during sex to avoid spreading the virus to their partners.

"Two potential modes of transmission are being considered - whether the virus was transmitted through unprotected sex, or the woman may have been bitten by an infected mosquito brought into the country in her partner's luggage", Mackie said in a Thursday statement.

Zika has become epidemic in Latin America and the Caribbean since last fall.

The official blog of the company also has a map that shows the Google Search for the ZIka virus, as it increases by 3,000 percent around the world.

In an effort to raise awareness of the virus, Google search has added information about Zika, symptoms and public health alerts available in 16 languages.

Past year the organization gave more than $100 million in grants, $1 billion in Google resources and 80,000 volunteer hours.

Most recently, the first case in Slovakia was recorded.

Google also announced a $1 million grant for UNICEF to be used for mosquito eradication, vaccine development, and awareness campaigns.

"If we don't get funding until after we see transmission in the United States, until after we see children born with birth defects, then we're well behind the curve", Pope said.

The Alameda County Public Health Department website confirmed that an Alameda County resident, who had been traveling in a Zika affected country, had tested positive for the virus last month.

It appears as if the tech giant company had what it takes in order to take the investigation's regarding the Zika virus to its conclusion.
