Denise Matthews, troubled 1980s pop singer known as Vanity, dies a 57

Vanity now known as Denise Matthews performs with the group Vanity 6 on the TV Show "Solid Gold". TMZ reports that she'd been fighting kidney failure and abdominal illness in recent years, and she passed away yesterday at a hospital in Freemont, California. She was 57.

Before she began her singing career, Matthews was a beauty pageant contestant and model before being discovered by Prince, who was responsible for coming up with the homonymous moniker Vanity.

Vanity 6 released just one self-titled album, with their biggest hit being Nasty Girl, released in 1982 and produced by Prince.

The Eye reported CBS All Access had its busiest day ever, with the highest number of new user registrations in a single day. The digital media unit said those issues were resolved and all users were able to access the live stream by 10 p.m.

"Back when I was Vanity, it was all about being sexy, getting slimmer, and getting cuter", Matthews told VIBE's Keith Murphy in a 2007 interview.

Matthews said she had no regrets about leaving her celebrity lifestyle behind.

In the movie, The Last Dragon, Matthews' gained a cult following by playing dance show host Laura Charles, opposite martial arts master, Taimak.

She spent her final years as a born-again Christian. She said, "You can't throw me in the pool, you're too little".

The condition causes a blockage in the small bowel and the star was hoping to raise money to republish her autobiography Blame It On Vanity, the sales of which she was hoping would help fund her medical expenses.
