As majority leader, McConnell has discretion over whether to schedule a full Senate vote. Republicans have opposed almost all of Obama's major initiatives during the first seven years of his presidency, and filling the court vacancy is shaping up as a monumental election-year fight.

As could be expected, the results fall largely along party lines. It's all surprisingly simple, and to date, Republicans haven't come up with any coherent defense for rejecting any White House nominee, sight unseen.

Next, the president's nomination is sent to a smaller group within the U.S. Senate, the Senate Judiciary Committee. The Senate is to consider that nomination, and either they disapprove of that nominee or that nominee is elevated to the Supreme Court.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, who initially said a nominee should wait, has suggested since he might be open to allowing confirmation hearings.

Obama is president for another 338 days. "I think it is possible to get someone confirmed".
