Backstage at the Westminster Dog Show

This is the third time a German shorthaired pointer has won the prestigious dog show, which took place Monday and Tuesday in New York City at Madison Square Garden and Piers 92 and 94 on the Hudson River.

CJ won best in show at the 140th Westminster Kennel Club on Tuesday night, beating a couple of top favorites at a almost packed Madison Square Garden.

The talented dog has won 18 best-in-show honors in six months.

Rogers took an interest in dogs at a young age and credits her mom with getting her involved.

"It's the best show in the world, the one everybody wants to win and the one where everybody cries if they lose", Cornelius said.

"I can't believe this", Baez said after her dogs were announced as winners and she hugged her daughter Chelsea and her husband, Jose.

"The reason (the Lab) is not going to win is because we're No. 1" in popularity, said Lab breeder Sharlene Pitman of King George, Virginia.

The dog - also known as Vjk-Myst Garbonita's California Journey - was described by the judge as an "outstanding example of the breed and an outstanding example in the ring". CJ stood stoically by her side and was occasionally rewarded his favorite chicken treats.

Kent Boyles, the handler of the favored German shepherd Rumor who competed in 176 shows in 2015, said this was Rumor's last show.

"For us that are in this sport, this is the pinnacle", she said.

Still waiting are breeds as rare as Dandie Dinmont terriers and as familiar as Labrador retrievers, the nation's most popular purebred dog.

"He's exhausted, but he's enjoying the trip", Nunes-Atkinson said. Long regarded as an in-demand handler, she's now fitted her résumé with a bold new topline.

"The past 36 hours have been such a whirlwind, it hasn't really hit us yet", said Mark Ulrich, one of CJ's owners.

"He's silly at home, playing with ... He rips around our property with his best-friend, Ramona", a whippet. He's a typical dog, a normal dog: he gets dirty, he has fun. "Always. That's a sporting dog".
