Patiala House Court today sent JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar to 14-day judicial custody.

Students, academics and journalists took part in a fresh round of demonstrations on Tuesday to protest the arrest for sedition of Kanhaiya Kumar, president of the student union at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi.

Cameras also showed lawyers pushing and beating up a journalist who works with a media house while police remained mute spectator.

The Jail Superintendent has also been directed to take necessary steps to ensure that Kanhaiya is not harmed. However, when a Firstpost reporter was taking photos of lawyers scuffling with other groups, the lawyers grabbed his phone and took him inside a room and bashed him up until other press people intervened and rescued him.

The court also sought a report from the registrar general of the high court who too was present in the court room of the metropolitan magistrate on instructions of the apex court. The court ordered police commissioner to ensure that the accused, media and related lawyers must be provided security. The Supreme Court had categorically denied in the past the State's arguemnt in many of them and ruled that unless the speech incites violence, it should not be construed sedition in true spirit. "We are investigating this aspect, and we are conducting searches as well", he said.

The police is now carrying out raids in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Jammu and Kashmir, seeking those involved in the incident, a private news channel reported.
