With the NFL’s free agency period set to begin in a little over two weeks from now, it’s time for our annual look at the top free agents position by position. You can view each position as we post them by clicking on the navigation links above and below the analysis.

We’ll be posting a new position as often as possible, so be sure to check back for the latest updates and to see what players will be available for your favorite team to try and sign.

Free Agents by position: QB | RB | WR/TE | OL | DL | LB | DB | P/K

Best Available Talent

Drew Brees (New Orleans)   —  There is no chance whatsoever that the Saints let Brees walk and go in a different direction at quarterback. None. Much like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady last year, sooner or later he will be locked up. It’s just a matter of time. Still, he could become the best free agent on the market if things end up being strung out longer than anyone expects, so he’s on our list. Don’t expect your team to pick him up anytime soon though.

Possible Destination(s): New Orleans

Matt Flynn (Green Bay)  —  There has been quite a bit of talk as of late that the Packers will use their franchise tag on Flynn and then dangle him out for the highest bidder to pluck away in return for a high value draft pick or two. That scenario is certainly possible, especially with the signing of Jermichael Finley to a new two year deal yesterday. That said, it’s also possible that the Packers elect to simply let Flynn walk, use his projected cap space to fill other needs, and collect a nice compensatory pick back in return as well, so if you’re hoping he’ll be your team’s starter next fall, don’t worry too much just yet.

Possible Destination(s): Miami, Washington, Cleveland

Alex Smith (San Francisco)  —  Coming off one of the best seasons in franchise history, the 49ers aren’t likely to let Smith leave without a fight, and given how well he worked with head coach Jim Harbaugh, Smith would be wise to do what he can to stick it out in the Bay Area for the time being. Then again, if another team goes crazy and offers ridiculous money to be their starter, it would be hard to pass on that kind of situation.

Possible Destination(s): San Francisco, Washington

Kyle Orton (Kansas City)  —  Last year was about as up and down as it gets for Orton, who started the season off as the starter in Denver only to have his job taken over by Tim Tebow part way through. Orton was unceremoniously dumped shortly thereafter and the Chiefs wasted no time putting in a waiver claim to get him. He played fairly well, leading the Chiefs to wins in two out of three of his starts to end the season, and while Kansas City would like to bring him back as competition for Matt Cassel, if another team offers a starting gig or more money, that won’t happen.

Possible Destination(s): Kansas City, Washington, Miami, Seattle, Oakland, Arizona

Josh Johnson (Tampa Bay)  —  You won’t hear his name mentioned all that often, but Johnson is a quarterback that could generate a nice bit of interest on the open market this spring, as he’s shown in the past that he has the tools to be successful in this league. He’s been blocked by Josh Freeman for the past two seasons, making it difficult to showcase his talent, but Johnson may be an intriguing option for a team in need of competition at the quarterback spot that’s short on money to pay for the top level talent.

Possible Destination(s): Tampa Bay, Arizona, Washington, Seattle, San Francisco, Kansas City
