In what can only be described as a shocking turn of events in Oakland, Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is reportedly set to hit the open market as a free agent this off-season, with his contract voided after he failed to reach specific statistical incentives this year.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Asomugha’s contract contained complicated language that allowed for the record breaking deal to become null at the conclusion of the season. That portion of the agreement between the Raiders and Asomugha also prohibits the team from using the franchise tag on their star defender, making it unlikely that he’ll return to Oakland next season, considering the type of contract he’ll undoubtedly receive once free agency begins in February.
Asomugha joins a talented free agent class that already contains fellow All-Pro cornerback Champ Bailey, making this off-season one to watch regardless of the looming labor strife that could potentially cause a work stoppage in the fall.
