Phillips to keep job in Dallas through season finale

Starting a season off with a 1-4 record doesn’t exactly lend itself to job security for the head coach involved, but in the case of Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips, it seems as though he’ll maintain a tenuous hold on his position through the end of the season at the very least.

Team owner Jerry Jones indicated as much in his comments following Dallas’ disappointing loss on the road against Minnesota earlier today, and while the door will undoubtedly remain open for Phillips to be removed mid-season, it’s going to take a significant losing streak to force Jones’ hand.

“I’m not [optimistic],” Jones said. “I’m very disappointed. I realize the challenge that we’ve got, and we’re not playing well enough to get it done right now. We’re running out of the opportunity to make this season what we meant it to be.”

A large part of the problem for the Cowboys thus far has been their lack of discipline in all phases of the game, racking up double digit numbers in penalties for the third time this season.
