Not long ago, Jake Delhomme was on top of the world, leading Carolina to a stellar season and getting a major contract as a reward. But as in life, glory in the NFL is often fleeting, and Delhomme is now looking for work after being released from the Panthers earlier tonight.

Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer first reported that Delhomme had been cut loose, and while it will come as a shock to some, Carolina reached their decision some time ago, after fellow QB Matt Moore showed he could handle the starting role down the stretch last year. Delhomme will now become the top free agent available at the position this off-season, although it’s doubtful he’ll find any takers willing to give him a legitimate shot as a starter.
