Williams wants out; unhappy in Cleveland
After being traded to the Browns in 2008, Cleveland DT Corey Williams was fired up and ready to show his new team and city the same skills that made him a standout during his time in Green Bay.
But one season into his tenure with the Browns, head coach Romeo Crennel were sent packing and Eric Mangini was brought in to take his place. Crennel had been in Williams’ corner from day one, giving him plenty of playing time during an otherwise forgettable season. Mangini has flipped that script completely though, pushing Williams to the bottom of the depth chart and forcing him to play out of position as a 3-4 defensive end instead of inside at his natural defensive tackle spot.
So it comes as little surprise that Williams is now publicly airing his unhappiness towards the current regime, and while he has refrained from mentioning Mangini specifically in his comments, it’s no secret that he will demand to be traded once again this off-season, preferably to a team that employs a 4-3 defense.
For the time being though, Williams will continue to work hard in practice and do the things asked of him regardless of how he feels about it. But there is no doubt that the fire to succeed and win in this league still burn deep inside of him, and until the Browns rectify the situation, Williams isn’t likely to produce at the level expected of a player that’s under contract for more $8 million for next season.
