Ogunleye eyeing free agency, final contract

The Bears are looking at an off-season full of decisions on multiple fronts, with major questions in their front office, coaching staff, and roster. One of the issues they’ll likely be looking at is potentially re-signing defensive end Adewale Ogunleye to a new contract, as he’s currently slated to enter free agency next spring.

According to Chicago Tribune beat writer Vaughn McClure, any decision on Ogunleye will likely depend on the team’s assessment of how much production he’ll provide as age and other factors begin to take a toll on the 32 year old veteran. And while Ogunleye certainly hasn’t impressed all that much this season (35 tackles, 6 sacks), he feels that he’ll be able to contribute significantly to the Bears or another team that’s willing to give him a chance.

“It’s hard not to think about it because this could be your last few games here in Chicago. If that’s the case, it’s going to be a sad day. I love Chicago, the fans, coach Lovie Smith and general manager Jerry Angelo. There will be no bitterness if I’m not here, but the thing for me is to finish strong. Sometimes, change is good. Like me coming here from Miami. I didn’t like it at first, but now it’s a blessing. Do I want to retire as a Bear? Yes. But it’s a business. They have to handle their business. And I have to set my own market value.”

Given his age and decline in production this season, there is little doubt that Ogunleye will be looking at a fairly weak market for his services next spring. But that said, if he can play well in the final weeks this season, he may give himself a shot at earning a solid contract from a young team in need of a veteran presence, or one that is looking for a solid pass rusher to use in specific situations.
