Nine seasons into an illustrious NFL career, Jon Runyan began contemplating life after football. But after a brief period where he considered a potential run for a Congressional seat, Runyan came to the conclusion that he wasn’t ready to hang it up just yet, to the delight of the Chargers, who signed him to a one year contract earlier today.

San Diego had been flirting with bringing Runyan for some time, but that idea became a bit more urgent after right tackle Jeromey Clary went down with a season ending injury in the Chargers 32-3 win over the Denver Broncos. The exact monetary figures are not known at this point, but given the amount of time it’s taken Runyan to recover from his knee injury, it’s likely to be an incentive laden deal.

Runyan spent his entire career in Philadelphia up to this point, and comes to the Chargers in the midst of a serious push towards the playoffs. San Diego overtook the Broncos last Sunday in the standings to claim a one game lead, after having been three and half games back just a month ago.
