Matt Maiocco is reporting (via Twitter) that San Francisco QB Alex Smith has been impressive thus far during training camp, and is currently in line to win the starting role for the 49ers this season.

Obviously, there’s a whole lot more football to played in practice and in pre-season contests before 49ers head coach Mike Singletary declares Smith the winner of the competition, but the team’s front office and coaching staff have to be encouraged that Smith is playing well, given the abysmal start to his career.

Smith was selected #1 overall in the 2005 draft, but has thus far failed to live up to the expectations placed upon him by the 49ers and their fans, playing in just seven games over the past two seasons.
