Super Bowl in London?

According to a BBC report out this morning, the NFL has held ’substantive talks with city officials in London, England about the possibility of playing a Super Bowl there in the near future (H/T to NFP).

The league has apparently had an interest in playing the game outside of the US for some time and is now exploring its options with greater earnest given it’s desire to market the game elsewhere around the world.

As a life long fan of the game, I have to say that this is quite possibly the worst idea ever formulated in the minds of the NFL elite, although I understand it from a financial/marketing point of view. The Super Bowl is the last bastion of American sports to not be overtaken by the rest of the world, and it is a unique event that belongs here at home as far as I’m concerned.

That being said, this was bound to happen sooner or later with the way the league has been trying to market itself as of late. It’s not a done deal by any means, but given the tone of the report, I have a feeling we will see it come to fruition fairly soon. As always, we’ll keep you up to date on this and every other issue as it breaks.
