Despite a recent string of news claiming the Atlanta Falcons were leading the race to acquire All-Pro tight end Tony Gonzalez from the Kansas City Chiefs, Don Banks (SI.com) is now reporting that the Philadelphia Eagles have emerged as the new frontrunners, and currently have an offer on the table. It’s not known what the exact compensation package would be, but apparently the starting point for the Eagles is their 3rd round pick (#85 overall) and that could also include a 5th round pick as well.
In typical fashion, the Chiefs have said absolutely nothing on the matter, other than the pronouncement by team owner Clark Hunt during the owners’ meetings last month that KC would not be trading Gonzalez anytime soon. Given the impressive layer of silence coming from Arrowhead these days, it’s doubtful that the team will say much, if anything, until a deal occurs.
The Chiefs would prefer to receive a higher level of compensation than the third round pick the Eagles are currently offering, but they may have some difficulty in driving that price up unless they can keep more than one team in the mix for Gonzalez. Either way, things are likely going to get interesting by Saturday afternoon for the Chiefs and Gonzalez.
