Falcon nation in mourning

The Associated Press is reporting that former Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Shane Dronett was found dead in his home earlier today. Dronett was 38 years old, and left behind his wife and two young daughters.

Early police reports were somewhat vague, but suicide is suspected in the case. Dronett’s body is currently being autopsied by the medical examiner in Gwinnett County, GA, which is nearby metropolitan Atlanta.

Dronett was a 10 year veteran of the NFL, getting his start with Dan Reeves and the Denver Broncos in 1992 as a second round draft pick. Dronett later followed Reeves to Atlanta, spending seven seasons with the Falcons, and played an integral role in Atlanta’s defense during their surprising run to the Super Bowl in 1998.

Here are a few of the quotes made by his former colleagues upon learning of his passing:

Dan Reeves, former coach

“He was an integral part of our football team. He was really a good player. He gave us a lot of depth there. He was a happy go lucky guy. He was fun to be around, was always smiling and was the type of player you look for on a football team.”

“My prayers go out for Chris and her two daughters. You hate to lose anybody at any time but when your kids are high school age or younger it makes it tough, and it’s tough for Chris.”

Arthur Blank, owner

“The entire Atlanta Falcons family is saddened by the news of Shane Dronett’s passing. Our deepest condolences are with his family during this difficult time.”
