US Official Shot In One Of Mexico's Most Cartel-Ridden Areas

The FBI has issued a $20,000 reward for information leading to a suspect's arrest. Information can be provided to the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City at 555-080-2000. "The safety and security of our employees overseas is among our highest priorities", an embassy spokesperson said. He was taken to a nearby hospital and is in stable condition.

The official, who has not been identified, is seen in the first video making a transaction for a parking ticket around 6:16 p.m. on Friday.

A surveillance video posted to Facebook by the USA consulate shows the shooter waiting outside a parking garage before opening fire on Ashcraft's auto Friday evening.

In the CCTV footage, the shooter is seen wearing a blue shirt and blue pants resembling medical scrubs and a wig.

The shooter aimed and fired as the victim left a parking garage at a Guadalajara mall Friday evening.

. "We are working closely with Mexican law enforcement in this matter", a statement from the embassy said.

There has been no indication as to the motive for the shooting, but Guadalajara is a known bastion of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of Mexico's most powerful and violent drug gangs. Jalisco has been under a travel warning since December due to "continued instability" in the borders states of Michoacán and Zacatecas. In recent years, they have been indulging in violence and targeting Mexican soldiers and police.

In recent years, a handful of US consular employees and other USA agents have been attacked and killed in Mexico, according to the Associated Press.

A surveillance video recording taken at the scene of the crime shows the gunman following the unnamed USA official into a garage, meaning the attack was likely intentional.

Partlow reported from Mexico City.
